Fonden Gaia is seeking volunteer sleeping night shift staff

Gaia Crisis Centre is looking for volunteer sleeping night shift staff in Aarhus

Do you want to make a difference for women and children who have experienced physical and/or psychological violence? Then you might be exactly who we are looking for. Gaia Crisis Centre, located in the heart of Aarhus, is seeking volunteer night shift staff.

Read here what one of our current volunteers says about the night shift role:

“I chose to become a volunteer night shift worker at Gaia because I wanted to contribute to supporting women and children in crisis. I am a ‘new retiree,’ but I still have good energy and capacity to help others. I now volunteer one night every other week.

It is very rewarding to fill a role that is appreciated both by the women and children at the crisis centre and by the staff at Gaia. I also become part of a work community, which is valuable when you no longer have colleagues in the traditional sense. I now come very close to people in crisis and can help during the night hours. It is deeply fulfilling—and it gives a good feeling in my stomach.

I experience gratitude from the women and receive warm smiles from the children when they arrive in the safe environment at Gaia. Some nights I sleep undisturbed; other times I answer phone calls or receive a woman in crisis with her children. It feels meaningful when my effort makes a difference for someone in need.”

About the role

Do you want to make a difference for women and children who have experienced physical and/or psychological violence? Then you might be exactly who we are looking for. Gaia Crisis Centre, located in the heart of Aarhus, is seeking volunteer night shift staff.

As a volunteer sleeping night shift staff member, you are the responsible person during the night while the house is asleep.

Your main task is to be available to the residents of the house, as well as for in-person or phone-based contact, where an emergency admission may occasionally be required. Therefore, we prefer volunteers who are comfortable communicating in Danish.

Although you are alone on duty as the night shift volunteer, there will ALWAYS be an on-call staff member you can contact by phone. The shift starts at 20:00, but you are always welcome to arrive earlier, share dinner with the house, and spend a cosy evening together.

The shift ends the following day at 07:30 (09:30 on weekends), with the option to prepare a packed lunch for the day or stay and have breakfast with the house.

It is important to us that the women and children in the house get to know the staff well, and this of course also applies to you as a volunteer. Therefore, volunteers commit to at least one shift every two weeks for a minimum of 6 months.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Make a meaningful difference for women and children who have experienced violence
  • Become part of a social community with others who are passionate about the same field
  • Develop yourself personally and professionally, gaining knowledge about the field of violence and insight into how we work with it
  • Take part in themed evenings and social events
  • Feel that the help you provide is truly valued

We expect...

We are looking for someone with a warm and friendly presence, who is able to remain attentive and handle unpredictable situations and a changing environment. It is important to us that you are reliable, independent, and able to understand when to step forward—and when to step back.

When you choose to become a volunteer, it is because you have something extra to give and a genuine wish to do something good for others. It is very important to us that you feel like part of the house, and that what you contribute is valued. In return, you will be met with smiles, warmth, and gratitude from the women and children in the house.

We place great emphasis on ensuring that you feel well prepared for the role. You will receive thorough training when you start, as well as ongoing support and supervision together with the other volunteers.

At Gaia Crisis Centre, we embrace diversity and welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, religions, cultures, and professional experiences, reflecting the society we are part of. However, we prefer volunteers who are comfortable communicating in Danish due to the administrative tasks associated with the role.
